Roland Joffé President - Producer and Actor (United Kingdom)
Rarely, if ever, has a director entered the cinematic medium with Oscar nominations for his first two motion pictures, thus marking an auspicious beginning for Roland Joffé.Universally praised for his international style of movie-making on “The killing fields” and “The mission”.
Born in London in 1945, Roland Joffé graduated from Manchester University where he studied English and drama. He was one of the founders with Frank Dunlop of the Young Vic Theatre and became the youngest director for Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre. “The killing fields” is a frighteningly realistic depiction of a country (Cambodia) torn apart by war and terrorism.
With unanimous raves from domestic and international critics alike, the memoirs of New York Times reporter Sydney Schanberg gave moviegoing audiences a reality seldom seen on the screen. His second feature THE “Mission”, a cinematically beautiful, historical drama about an 18th century Jesuit mission in the Brazilian jungle, was the recipient of seven Oscar nominations, including director Joffé. It was also awarded the coveted Palme d’Or as best motion picture at the Cannes Film Festival and won Italy’s Michelangelo Prize. Again with “City of joy” Joffé has taken a personal story which affects the lives of those around his protagonist, and his directing style analyzes the drama in which it is placed. No two films are the same and he can never be accused of duplicating himself.
Taking another historical event in stride, Joffé’s latest effort as producer-director is the visually extravagant film entitled “Vatel” which earned a deserved Oscar nomination for Art Direction. Once again he was nominated for the Oscarfor his artistic direction. The program “Undressed”, since the beginning, received high audience ratings. |
