Norman Jewison President - Director (Canada)

Born in Toronto, Canada in 1926, Norman Jewison graduates from the University of Toronto and studies piano and music theory at the Royal Conservatory. After his studies, he moves to London where he starts writing scripts and acting for the BBC. Back to Toronto, he directs TV shows for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation television service between 1952 and 1958. He continues to turn out top-ranked TV work when he is signed by CBS in New York, winning three Emmy Awards between 1958 and 1961. In 1962, he directs his first feature film “40 Pounds of Trouble” starring Tony Curtis and one year later he becomes executive producer of the “Judy Garland Show". In 1965, he shoots his fifth feature film “The Cincinnati Kid” with Steve McQueen. Many of his films deal with racial issues discrimination like the acclaimed “In the Heat of the Night” (1967) starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger which wins five Oscars including Best Picture. In 1968, he works with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway and directs “The Thomas Crown Affair". Throughout his career, he also adapts hit stage shows to the big screen beginning with the Oscar winner “Fiddler on the Roof” (1971), followed by the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” (1973). In 1987, his film “Moonstruck” earns Cher an Oscar for Best Actress and he receives Best Director Prize at the Berlin Film Festival. In 1986, Norman Jewison founds the Canadian Film Centre, an advanced film and television training institute, located in Toronto. In 1999, he works with Denzel Washington and directs “The Hurricane", the true story of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a champion boxer wrongly convicted of murder. In 2003, he directs the thriller “The Statement” starring Michael Caine.
