John Boorman President of the Jury – Director, Screenwriter and Producer (United Kingdom)
Born in Shepperton (United Kingdom) in 1933, John Boorman wrote film reviews by the age of seventeen. In 1955, he became an editor for ITN television. He then directed documentaries for Southern television and directed a series of portrait documentaries entitled “Citizen 63, the newcomers” for the BBC. In 1962, he was the head of the Bristol BBC documentary unit.
In 1965, he directed his first fiction film “Catch us if you can” and it was distinctive and original enough to earn Boorman recognition as an innovative stylist by a number of prestigious publications. Following more work for the BBC, he made his Hollywood directing debut in 1967 with “Point blank”. Following the allegorical “Hell in the pacific” (1968), which cast Lee Marvin as a WWII soldier stranded on an island with a Japanese soldier, Boorman made “Leo the last” (1970) starring Marcello Mastroianni. The film earned John Boorman the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival.
“Deliverance”, Boorman’s 1972 follow-up to “Leo the last”, was nominated for three Oscars, including one for Best Director. The film quickly became a classic and starred Jon Voight and Burt Reynolds. Boorman’s next projects were “Zardoz” (1973) starring Sean Connery and “Exorcist II: the heretic” (1977), followed by “Excalibur” (1981). The film enjoyed a warm critical and commercial success and earned a number of honors, including an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 1985, he shoots “The emerald forest” in the Amazon: a life-changing experience. “Hope and glory” (1987). In 1990, he directs “Where the heart is” followed by “Beyond Rangoon” (1994). Four years later, John Boorman shoots “The General” and receives an award for Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 2001, he directs “The tailor of Panama” and two years later “Country of my skull”. In 2006, he shot his latest film “The tiger’s tail” starring Brendan Gleeson and Kim Cattrall.
